Some practical tips about flying into the Netherlands
As you start to plan your trip, we wanted to fill you in on a few important things to know about luggage and travel, as there have been plenty of crisis plaguing the world recently and the Netherlands is no exception.
If traveling by plane, we would highly recommend that attendees only take carry-on luggage and do not check their bags. (That means also no gate checks!!).
There have been lots of delays with checked baggage at Schiphol Airport this summer, with some anecdotal stories of luggage being lost for weeks. If possible, we would implore you to take hand baggage only. Travel lightly on the way here, go home fully packed is what we say.

Take public transport to the conference
The nearest airport is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The easiest (and also most sustainable) option after you land, is a train from Schiphol to Haarlem, for which you have to transfer at Amsterdam Sloterdijk.
Plan your train trip on the website of the national railroad NS.
There are also buses that go straight to Haarlem. For more detailed public transport information about the Netherlands, like traveling by bus, metro or train, go to https://9292ov.nl
Green fundraiser
To compensate for the travel emissions involved in getting speakers and attendees to Haarlem, we will launch a fundraiser at One Tree Planted. OPEN will ‘plant’ the first few thousand trees and we hope to triple or quadruple this number with your help. We will share the link to the fundraiser on this page as soon as it’s up.
Buying a public transport ticket at Schiphol
At Schiphol, you can buy the single paper ticket at the blue-grey ‘Public Transport Tickets’ machines. These are located at the baggage reclaim area of Arrivals 3 and just outside Arrivals 3, at the escalators, up to Departures 3. In these ticket machines you can also buy your Amsterdam Travel Ticket.
It’s easy to buy and top up the rechargeable public transport chip card at the NS ticket machines at all railway stations. These yellow machines are operated by the national train carrier ‘Nederlandse Spoorwegen’ (NS), At Schiphol you will find them at Schiphol Plaza.
Shared mobility
Uber is available in Amsterdam and Haarlem. Shared mobility is available through Felyx, GO and ShareNow.
Other important information
Travel is not included in the conference fee. For issues regarding Covid, Monkeypox, we follow health guidelines by the RIVM and other Dutch authorities.
We’re excited to welcome you to the Philharmonie in Haarlem very soon!
