ICPR 2024 Abstract
Insights from 8 years of CIIS professional training program in psychedelic-assisted therapies
Reflections will be discussed about a bounty of learnings from the first academically accredited training program in psychedelic-assisted therapy and research, conducted at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). We have trained 1,200 mental health and medical professionals, as well as ordained clergy since we began in 2016. Some professors at other universities thought we started too soon, however the swift growth in the field of psychedelics in the past 8 years has proven us correct in breaking trail for other universities to follow. Dr. Janis Phelps published the first scholarly analysis of methods and curricula for psychedelic-assisted therapy training [1]. She founded and is directing the CIIS training program with the values and guidelines outlined in that article and other publications [2 - 4]. This program has classes in San Francisco, Boston, and Portland, Oregon with 12 areas of study, individual and group mentoring, a focus on Beloved Community, and experiential practices.
Insights from what has worked and not worked as well in these training areas in the last 8 years will be presented. Participants who are contemplating the creation of their own training program will have the opportunity to hear seasoned recommendations for university-based and other non-profit based programs. This presentation encourages this development of high standard academic training programs worldwide to meet the immense need for more professionals and lay people to be trained well so that future community centers and clinics will serve future clients with excellence.
